I am having a dilema. I can't decide on what to give an 'informative' speech to my class about in Public Speaking. I have to have a visual that 'makes a break through' with the audience. My first incarnation of the speech was going to be about how mass hysteria causes differences in description of encounters with strange creatures like the Jersey Devil of Mothman...

But that'd be too lengthy for a 5-7 minute speach and it doesn't show how anything would work.

So any suggestions? And we're being videotaped.

Hmmmm.. I remember my publilc speaking class. I at the time Tammy and Jimmy were being unmasked as phony preachers and the other guy had just been caught blessing some hooker in a motel. So I opted for a satire on down home preaching.

Lots of emphatic 'do you believe' and then passing a plate with a huge sack attached as well as working up audience participation with amens to everything .. such as how lunch hours should be all day, and school should be based on a three day week (Sat. Sunday, and recess).

Went over pretty good.. I had everyone stomping to a foot beat of an imaginary hymn ... even the teacher next door came over to see what was happening and left smiling.

You have to be pretty clear that it is satire tho.. or you may run the risk of offending someone...

Thats all there was to it.....

Ahmen....

I'd agree with meathook. It will be easier to speak on something you already care about, plus that is quite a long speech. You'd be surprised at what you can cover if you plan to speak concisely. Many public speakers waste a lot of time, so could fit their entire speech [just the parts worth listening to...] in 5-7 minutes...

Use a topic you are really pasionate about. If you are well versed and enjoy the topic the rest is easy. And believe it or not 5-7 minutes is a long time and you can cover a lot of information during that period.
