By "hat" I take it you mean bowlers, fedoras, etc.? A formal hat? They are pretty much a thing of the past. But hats as practical objects, to shield you from the sun or keep your head warm, sure. Baseball caps are very common among every informally dressed man. They cut across all sociocultural groups and often are used to create an image of who the person wearing it is -- is it a John Deere or Cubs hat? That tells you plenty. And in cold climates, woolly or furry hats of various kinds are worn by quite a few men (don't know why they're not all wearing them, frankly). And then there are cowboy style hats -- again, it's all about image and sun protection.

But formal hats, like you'd wear with a suit? No, that's so yesterday! Women also rarely wear hats, except in the black community, where there's still a tradition of church hats -- many of them really fabulous -- and in the summer, where straw hats are worn for sun protection at the beach or resort. There are women who like to wear baseball hats, but it's tough on hairdos.

Americans wear hats some more than others depending on what part of the US you are in. Along the West Cost of the US they tend not to wear hats that much other than baseball caps. In the Mid-West of the US they tend to wear cowboy hats and baseball caps. Not sure about other parts of the US. But it seems like wearing hats other than Baseball caps is going a bit out of style.

Mostly you see men wearing baseball caps here. I live in the South near Texas, so I see men wearing cowboy hats a lot. But I never see men wearing fedoras or derbies and the like. I don't know why we don't wear them anymore. It's considered bad manners to wear hats indoors, so that may be part of the reason. Hats are inconvenient in modern times, when people are going in and of buildings all day.

Amercians wear hats all the time....

Baseball caps, cowboy hats, hardhats, motorcycle helmets, etc. We dont wear hats for ornamentation, we wear them for shade, sun protection, safety, etc.

If you mean ornamental hats, such as bowlers, derbys or Fedoras, that went out of style in the US with JFK in the 60s. In the 50s EVERYONE in America wore a hat when outdoors. Kennedy didn't, men noticed women seemed crazy-attracted to him ANYWAY and presto! Fedora sales plummet.

These days anyone wearing a strawhat or a derby into a bar in the US would either be beaten up or at least ridiculed mercilessly.

The hat of choice in America is the ball cap, worn almost exclusively by men. Women in America rarely wear hats.
