if i disable either one of my connections i can not connect. do i need two connections? one says it's dsl/broadband and the other says it's a local area network.

it is important for you to have local area connection because that is the where the protocol is for your network adapter. so that the adapter can communicate well with the modem/router.
the dsl/broadband connection is the PPPoE profile to authenticate to your service.PPPoE profile can be on your computer or it could be on the interface of your modem(if it has one).just call your ISP to know where your PPPoE is.if it is on the interface of your modem then you can delete the dsl/broadband profile on computer.

The local area network is the network card in yuor computer...
the other is a virtual connection made by softwatre from your isp....and yes disabling either will disable your connection. Why 2? it's a security thing...

on a wireless NETWORK . you have a adapter , dsl , both are connections .
your computer/s are local to you . and the dsl is broadband .

the local area network is the one that allows you to connect to the internet service provided by your isp..so you need both.

its essential to have these two connections because you are connecting your router to your computer through LAN...
