Emily is technically correct; Magellan was killed in the Philippines but one of his ships made it back to Spain...you could also argue that one of Magellan's crew, his steward I believe, was from the Malacca Islands, so when they got there he had finished the first circumnavigation.

The first expedition leader/ captain to go all the way around ( and come back with TONS of Spanish gold!) was Sir Francis Drake.

You should probably find a book or something specifically on this, but I'm pretty sure that Ferdinand Magellan's crew were the first, because Magellan died. Sir Francis Drake was the first captian to make it around the world [living, and with his crew].
