"Wifebeaters" got their name from the assumption that they were worn by men who beat their wives - they've been associated with street gang culture and southern "rednecks".

They are also called A-Shirts or muscle tanks.

They also got popular because of that show "COPS", alot of the domestic disputes involved men wearing these sort of shirts.
