i think it has to do with earthquakes. if im correct they are measured on the rictor scale or something like that

Yes I will.

Study of earth movements, in other words earthquakes, just not it self but they study them my plotting the tremors that is why it has the ending of "graphy".

Ultimate goal is to predict them ahead of time to save life, other goal is to come up with techniques so we can have structures that can servive the strong quakes, and after shokes.
