WHAT THE H-E-double hockey sticks have you been watching.
There hasn't been decent fighting in the NHL in years and years.

What hockey are you watching so I can watch it too. There isn't that much fighting in the NEW NHL. As to the fighting that DOES break out it is the good old-fashioned you hit my teammate(usually Captain or Big Star) wrong so I'm getting you. Sometimes it is just a way to get the fans behind the team.

Because it is a very physical sport. They play with much passion and fervor and sometimes that results in fighting. They also have a lot of respect for their teammates and will stand up for them without a second thought. Fighting in hockey is a very small part of the game and is usually isolated between two combatants. There are more more bench clearing brawls in basketball and baseball then there are in hockey.

because there is often something to fight about, a hockey player will never start or fight without a reason (although it may just be that he's frustrated and needs to let it out, hahaha). when an opponent player is really, really annoying you and you're totally pissed off, and you've got an oppertunity to hit him, many people (in ice hockey gear and on the ice during the game or a stoppage of play) will seize that oppertunity, and although as a ref i have to condemn this: as a playwer i can't blame them!

I think some of you are becoming confused - the person is not asking "Why is there so much fighting in the NHL" the question is "Why is there so much fighting in ice hockey?" Well, mainly it's just out of frustration I'd imagine.

part of the culture of the game. hockey is, inherently, an extremely dangerous sport - the players have sharp blades on their feet and weapons in their hands. fighting is a safety valve and an enforcement tool used to self-govern the players on the ice and keep them from harpooning one another with their sticks. here's a link to the best hockey fight site on the Internet:

There's a lot less fighting now than previously. The league is clamping down on fighting in order to gain a wider audience.

You play on ice, and that's a very fast surface, the guys are big, they bump each other fighting for the puck, it's painful, builds frustration/aggression.

Sometimes fighting can actually be encouraged to change the momentum of the game. You definitely have to see it live to appreciate it. As for the person about who made a comment about their gear protecting them; most times, they drop their gloves and helmet before fighting.
