Tolerance to me means being understanding and patient with people, especially those that are different from me. I think as an individual all I can do is carry myself in a positive way and tolerate others despite differences.

Tolerant according to one dictionary is "Official recognition of the rights of individuals and groups to hold dissenting opinions, especially on religion". It doesn't' mean agreement, but it does mean not interfering with that person's rights. Those rights should, however, always be subject to not conflicting with higher rights (e.g. human rights) and, most specifically, religious beliefs (or lack of them) can't supersede law. Personally, I tolerate -- in the dictionary sense -- people with religious beliefs. But that doesn't mean I agree with them (and I don't have much respect for their intellectual powers). I basically try to tolerate religious people the same as I do smokers and heavy drinkers ... they have a right to their vice ... as long as it only effects them. Unfortunately I'm starting to recognize that religion is increasingly a danger to us all and I'm becoming less tolerant than I used to be before I recognized the problems religion in general (not just so called fundamental religion) have, and increasingly are, causing in the world.

I think tolerance is overpromoted especially in the UK where it's turned into "anything goes if you are an immigrant". You can't say boo without offending some stupid foreigner and it's all in the name of tolerance. I don't go out of my way to promote tolerance ever, but that doesn't mean I'm not accepting of people.

tolerance is an gradual acceptance of something that you don't agree with. In essence, it is wrong. If I don't like the smell of dog poo, just because there is more of it and I have grown used to the smell, doesn't mean that I now have to like it.
Same goes with societal outcasts, such as gays. They want tolerance for their lifestyle, but give no tolerance to those who oppose them. Liberalism is the same. Liberals demand tolerance, yet never give it in return.

Tolerance is respecting the right of people to their own opinions and choices.
You can be tolerant of people even if you don't agree with their choices.
E.g. if you are against wearing the colour red, you may disagree with people who wear red, but you have to respect that is is their right to do so.

Understanding the problem and accepting a difference of opinion in relation to that problem. Promote good clear thinking on issues of difference.

tolerance is putting up with alot of annoying, aggravating, angering or saddening things also its getting used to things you dont agree with. "turn the other cheek" and compromise are at the heart of tolerance.
You can say whatever you want and put up the posters but when people get pushed too far they lash out. you cant stop it. everyone hates being annoyed or bullied
its also not right for people to diss your opinion and then cram theirs down your throat
