Women I've met who've tried it either adore the Depo shot or hate it with the heat of a thousand suns. Some women have no side effects and glide blithely through life, others have horrible side effects (serious weight gain, major loss of sex drive, and long-term spotting seem to be the most common ones). And the problem is that, if you do have serious side effects, you can't just stop the medicine, like you can with the patch or pill (which also have the risk of major side effects, to be fair, but I hear a lot less complaining about them). You're stuck with it for at least three months.
Personally I am very fond of the pill, but you have to be able to remember to take it every day at the same time... a lot of women have trouble with this. For more long-term stuff, you can try the Nuva-ring (which you put in once a month, then remove it three weeks later) or the patch (replace once a week).

I have tried every contraceptive you can think off and i personally dont recommend the injection it made me gain weight have acne painful periods (when i had one went 6 months without one then was on a period for 6 weeks) and gave me terrible mood swings. I now have the implant in my arm i have had it in 2 years and is fantastic no weight gain no spots and periods are fine also you dont have to remember to take it or go back every 12 weeks for a injection. Antibiotics dont effect it you can have it in for 3 years or less once it has been removed your fertility returns to normal almost straight away. I would defiantly give the injection a miss and look more into the implant

i have been using depo provera injections for over 10 years and not really had any problems. i am persoally very bad taking pills and I like the convenience of only have the shot four times a year. and I love only having my period 4 times per year. I have gained approximately 10 - 15 pounds since I have been on the shot since 1994 or 1995..but I think that's just me and being lazy not the shot.
i have really very little side effects and have been quite happy with it. However, i have not yet tried to get pregnant, and have heard it can take up to two years for that to happen. I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

I had my last shot 6 months ago and my periods have still not returned.
While I was on the depo shot I didnt have to remember to take pills, just go every 12 weeks for a top up. I had no problems at all. It suited me well.
When my missed shot was due I did bleed for 3 weeks but nothing since and I am now not ovulating which does concern me as I would like to try for a baby.
If you are not planning to start a family in the near future then I would reccommed the shot but if you think you'll want one in the next 2 years or so, stick to the pills. They come out of your system much quicker.

I used to use the injections and never had any side effects but all women are different. I was told you can only use it for one year then you have to chose another contraceptive. I am now on birth control pills, but a friend of mine says she likes the nuevo ring. You should check on it.

If you are speaking of the Depo-Provera shot, do not do it. Try the nuvaring or something if you don't want to take pills. I did the shot, which stays in your body for 3+ months. I was on my period for 6 months straight, I talked to several Dr.s who said to be patient. I had absolutely no sex drive, if my boyfriend would touch me I would want to throw up and hit him. From bleeding constantly, I became very anemic and could not be the fun loving, active person I used to be. I cried constantly for no reason, severely depressed. The list could go on for pages.
So, since there isn't any way to get the hormones out of your system for several months, don't do it because it can drastically impact your life, affecting relationships, work, activities, etc. There are better ways.

i was on it for just over a year and i wouldnt reccomend it. the only good thing was my periods stopped altogether. The bad things were the weight gain, headaches and mood swings. see your doctor or practise nurse who can discuss all the different options with you. when you come of the jag as well it still takes minimum 3 months to get back to normal.
