stay in and cook her dinner, eat by candlelight...it is SO much more romantic than eating at a busy restaurant and fighting crowds at the movie theater.

You and your companion can get a good, relaxing massage at a day spa or a spa in a luxurious hotel. Afterwards, go out for a romantic dinner and stay over in the hotel or go out on the town. If you stay in the hotel, secretly arrange for some flowers/chocolate/champagne to be waiting when you return. Consider writing a poem or note on beautiful, elegant stationary to your loved one. It's the effort and personal touches that matter the most and show your consideration and affection. Also--a nice change of scenery can do wonders.

My mum used to have little gifties on our breakfast plates, nothing too lavish , maybe hershey kisses or candy hearts. We always got and gave cards to everyone in our family including the pets.
Instead of just making it a romantic day for spouses, why not having a family picnic indoors, especially since most of north america is going to be in a deep freeze. Red and white table cloth , dishes etc. Red and white foods or dessert.
Instead of sexy lingerie get comfortable pjs in a valentine's theme . Have a chocolate fondue with fruit to dip.
Find some wonderful old movies that celebrated love and families and friendship that the whole family can watch.

Cuddle time with a movie and fingerfoods. Kids at a sitters. Difficult to arrange on V-day, so a "gift certificate" for friday or saturday would be nice.
....Any alone time is great when you've got three little ones.
Museum, gutiar concert, repeat of your first date or other special event
