Civil law is anything dealing with issues that arise between parties over private rights, such as automobile accidents, etc.
Criminal law is anything dealing with issues that have been brought by the state or the government for violation or injury to public rights, such as rape, etc.

Criminal Law deals with serious crimes and felonies. Civil is the more petty and misdemeanor things.
