Would she pour her kid a glass of wine and let it drink it? Course not, but thats effectively what youre doing when youre drinking and pregnant. No wine, no shandy, no lager, no vodka.....no booze!! Have fun on Saturday xx

People really need to get past the idea that wine and beer are different. I mean yes, obviously, they're different, but it's all alcohol, and it's the alcohol that can have the negative effects on the babe.

Anyway, if you want to get into a big medical b*tchfest, ask several doctors about maternal drinking effects on the fetus. From the mention of shandy, I'd guess that you're in the UK, where they have a more relaxed attitude about drinking than here in the US. I've heard that many UK doctors say that a preganant mom can have two alcohol units (1 unit =1 12 oz beer=1 4 oz glass of wine=1 cocktail) twice a week. Here in the US, the prevailing attitude seems to be no alcohol at all for the first trimester and then *maybe* an occasional drink. If you don't mind being looked at like the reincarnation of Hitler for drinking while visibly pregnant.

Reading the literature, I suspect that a glass or two of wine as a special treat for the mom-to-be, after the first trimester is okay. The big problems really occur when the mom's an alcoholic and drinks regularly and heavily... that can *seriously* hurt the kid. But the evidence for the harm of occasional, light drinking is scanty.

There was a TV program some time ago and showing the children who's got alcohol syndrome. They have behaving problems or learning difficulty etc... I could see their face are different like down syndrome, so shocked and felt sorry for their mum. Those mum were saying that nobody told them how dangerous to drink in their pregnancy even GP neither midwives. I am sure you can find some information from the net ( sorry I am so busy looking after my 6month old baby). That program showed us what one unit looks like( it is not a glassful) which most of people are thinking we allowed to drink in a week.
Personally I would not recommend any drinking because as long as you drink there is always some risk your lovely baby may have something. I know so many pregnant lady had drunk heavily and still had a healthy baby is it worth to take risk on your baby's health?

I have heard this, never from my doc, but read it is pregnancy book my self that 2 glasses was OK. But there is also not enough years of studies on it, so why would you want to risk it. Enjoy a couple glasses of wine during your pregnancy and possibly have a mentally or physically retarded child for the rest of your life, I think the answer is obvious. Tell her she needs to be smart about it and give it up for the nine months, since you really don't know for sure! Good Luck, you sound like a real caring friend.

well pregnant mom's did it in the 50's and 60's and kids seemed to come out more normal than they do now. I mean it's probably not a good idea, I mean the alcohol is going into the fetus and can cause the kid to be retarded or have other handicaps. If she's doing this on a daily basis she's definitley going to screw up her kid in which case she and the child will have to pay for her drinking for the rest of thier lives. Maybe she should ask herself if it's really worth it.

No one should drink any kind of alcohol at all when pregnant. It can hurt your unborn baby. She should get a second opinion from another doctor.

Tell your friend to look at this site and read the info in it:

http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/brain/fas.html

Here's a quote from the site:

"Alcohol (wine, beer, or liquor) is the leading known preventable cause of mental and physical birth defects in the United States.

When a woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy, she risks giving birth to a child who will pay the price — in mental and physical deficiencies — for his or her entire life."

If you are a good friend, you will show her the web site and make her understand that it is bad to drink alcohol while pregnant.

Good luck.

They say something like 2 glasses of wine are fine, and nothing more than wine... but.. I wouldn't drink anything, we all know whatever we eat or drink is goin to find it's way to the baby, and we don't want to give alcohol to our babies...

There are differing opinions on this but my mates have all had 2 glasses or so a week. Their kids were great.
