Take Football for example. Teams tend to win proportionately more at home than away, yet they are ultimately playing on a rectangular patch of grass against the same opponents regardless of location.

Has any research ever been done into this?

Is it a mental thing?

I am intrigued as to the causes.

You're used to the texture of grass and how your shoes interact with it. I believe being familiar and hence comfortable with the surrounding makes you play better. Of course having more supporters help too. At the end of the day, it's probably a mental thing - you thought you were going to win you're playing at home, so you tend to play better?

There have been some exceptions for this. Take Denver's 97-98 season, they won more at home than they did on the road. So this does not always stay true.

But the reason is the fans give an extra boost of confidence. It is a big mind game for the players. For some teams the elevation is key to winning, if you are use to a certain elevation, then you tend to do better there.

The crowd factor is big in this. The home supporters cheer the home team (except if its England) and don't cheer the opposition. This is a psychological factor and the main one in the answer to your question. Others are the 'run' of the ground, and knowledge of it. If you were playing with 70000 home supporters with you, and about 500 away supportets against you in a home game you would feel better wouldn't you.

It all boiles down to sheer mental preparations. When you play at home you have the knowledge of your own field, plus the crowd/fans are more likely to back you at a home game as opposed to a away game. The psychological aspect of home field advantage is just that...psychological, but it usually proves to be a big factor in Big games.

Good question, I used to play football for local amatuer teams and it happened to us so it isnt just playing in front of a big home crowd as we didnt have a crowd. It did feel strange though playing on a different pitch so I think it could be psychological.

The fans, Man utd are better at old trafford cos they have about 65 thousand man utd fans cheering them on as opposed to the away teams 5 or 6 thousand or whatever. Its just about the support and the familiarity of their home turf i suppose.

Of course its mental. Have you never played sports?? Playing at home is overwhelming, in a positive way. The fans are screaming for you, rather than against you. This is where you practice almost daily. This is YOUR stomping ground....YOUR house, and you defend it that way. At least you should!

i believe home field advantage is completely mental. you have to understand how hard it is to go on the road. it means getting up early, taking long flights, and leaving their family for a little time. it takes a toll on your mind and you become mentally tired. also, you really feel comfortable on your home field because you practice there and you have a feel for the turf and the weather is comfortable for you. nobody wants to go to lambeau in the winter unless you're green bay and you are use to the weather. so it is all about being comfortable.

People think it is because of the cheering crowd, but I think it is because the home team knows the field and weather so much better. Yes it is the same patch of ground, but footing changes, winds blow, etc.

i do no longer comprehend if there's a definite reason i think of that's genuine, yet while a collection is used to their field, locker room, and the city they're in; they are able to do incredibly nicely. it might desire to be via fact they have all their followers at domicile, and comprehend each and every bump on the sector. seem on the NBA Finals...Has there been possibly 3 street wins? the only "logical" answer i will think of of on your question is gamers getting used to their field, park, and so on. i think of for a collection to play greater efficient on the line they might would desire to play at their opponent's park assorted situations, yet even that wouldn'y provide you a win. that's basically how a collection performs on a given day.
