I came across an answer you have given to a question on Plovdiv, BG, and wanted to write to you as you are doing a project and making a major mistake: gypsies, or Roma as they prefer to be called, are NOT the native population of Bulgaria. They came to the Balkan peninsula with the Turks in the late 14th century. They originate from India, where they used to belong to a certain cast. Then they actually moved all around Europe.
Yes, some of them live in shanty towns. This happens when they decide to settle in an open field close to a large town - naturally they have no ownership of the land and the plot is not (or was not at the time) included in the city cadastre. If you have more questions you can send me an e-mail.
