Get him some of those valentine lotto tickets. Maybe he will hit it big.

How about making him something?
A tin of heart shaped cookies or brownies.
Bake a heart shaped cake you both can enjoy...after a nice meal that you cooked for him perhaps?

Buy a frame and decorate it yourself with paint or whatever you are comfortable with and put in a lovely photo of the two of you.
Get him a box of his favourite chocolates...and write a love poem in a card that you made.
I think most guys don't want cutesy bears or stuff that girls think they like... Keep it simple and don't fret over it.
My bet is on food...always enjoyed & appreciated.
It's just Valentine's Day not your anniversary which is a little more important right?

Have fun and don't succumb to the advertisement pressure!
Enjoy the company.

I got my boyfriend, Keith, 2 goldfish. I put them in a goldfish bowl with some colorful rocks...cause i couldn't find any of his favorite color and i got him a little castle to go in it.
He's gonna love it. Get him something like that. Its cute its creative its small. I know how you feel I'm 17 and so is Keith...well..hes 17 and a senior..and I'm a junior..(NOT cause I failed. I have a late birthday)

You could get him a rose and make a paper heart with a unique quote in it that he will know is between you two. It seems on valentines day it is always the women/girls who receive the roses and sometimes you need to let them know they are also special.

Have you ever heard of post secret? Go to www.postsecret.com I read something really cute on there about a boyfriend who is getting there girlfriend a post secret book and putting secrets of there own in there, each secret is something he loves about her. Try that. I think any guy or girl would really appreciate that.
