Several days ago I uninstalled Zone Alarm using Windows Add/Remove programs. Shortly afterward I began to have an odd problem. I could get email, I could sign on to AOL IM but I couldn't "surf" (I use IE but also tried on Netscape and no go). I have a Comcast cable modem that's been working just fine up until recently. I called Comcast and they eventually sent someone out. Well, he made it worse! He went on my computer to the Windows Set-up and kept trying to reinstall something. He said something about Winsock 1 and 2 and kept mumbling that it had been a long time since he worked on Win 98. I have Win ME Einstein! By the time he was done I couldn't even use my email or IM anymore. He said the only thing I could do is back up my files and use my Compaq recovery disk to reinstall whatever I've lost! What the hell? I'm now at work so I'm going to try to pick the brains of you all out there and see if there's anything else I can do.

After the bozo from Comcast left I did reinstall Zone Alarm but that didn't help. I think he might have deleted something I needed when he was screwing around.

Eyz ... Although you've given a thorough description of the problem along with all the background, there doesn't seem to be enough info to figure out exactly what is wrong. Sorry the Comcast tech made it worse.

By what you've said, I got the impression that the tech admitted defeat and was telling you to save your data and then re-install Windows. I hope that's not really necessary.

I'd start by tring to find your Comcast set-up/installation wizard and re-install their package just as if you just began your service with them. I feel this will straighten out any Comcast-related settings that got messed up, but it might also verify and/or correct other Windows-related settings that are needed to successfully access the Internet. If the Comcast installation wizard is really good, it might find and report whatever problems there may be.

However, if this doesn't fix it and you don't get the help you need from here, it seems you'll have only two options left:

1 - Bring the system to the Geek Squad or some other competent technician, or

2 - Save all your data as best you can and then re-install Windows.

Good luck, Eyz.

thers your problem....

Zone alarm is a firewall that blocks access to your system... the problem is (and i don;t know why this happens) is that zone alarm grants access to the net and without zone alarm there to say "YES" let you in you;re blocked...yes even when you have uninstalled ZA.

What you can do is:
Reinstall Zone Alarm this will restore funtionality to the firewall..and also internet access..

you would be stepping down, this is for specific. hassle-free surfing you in all probability won't notice too lots of a distinction, yet with that speed substitute you will actual see it on downloads. I, individually, dislike Comcast. i do no longer care how briskly their connection is. My AT&T will proceed to be greater inexpensive interior the long-term. maximum Comcast deals expire in 365 days and then the charges get jacked way up.
