i haven't heard st. anger or any of their newer works, but nu metal is a phrase someone used to describe it to met

is this true, and if so, wtf?

They're not QUITE nu yet, but they're nowhere near real metal anymore. They're commercial MTV cr4p these days. The glory days when metallica still played proper metal have ended with the black album.
Don't listen to metallica and get into some TRUE metal bands, not this commercial whatever-core nu groove cra4p that tries to pass for metal nowadays.

If they told you Metallica are Nu metal. Then they do not know what nu metal really is. Metallicas sound has changed quite a bit since the black album. But they are still more thrash metal then anything. I heard a rumor they may even be going back to the Ride the Lightning type sound on the next CD.

No. People who say that are people I call retarded fart lemurs. Metallica is still a heavy metal band. People call them nu-metal because of the sound of St. Anger. If you listen to the tracks, they have a detuned sound to it. But, honestly there is not rapping or even any quasi-rapping involved.
