I don't agree with Marzipan, Barcelona is a beautiful place if you know where to go. Especially if you enjoy art and sightseeing. All cities have an ugly side, and it seems she must have found Barcelona's. I went to Barcelona in October and it was amazing! I would buy the Time Out Barcelona book which tells you all the best restaurants to go to and places to visit and, as you wish to find out - hotels. The prices really do vary, and I would also advise booking in advance.

When I went I stayed in the Barri Gotic near La Ramblas and I just can't for the life of me remember the name of the hostal (a cheaper, smaller version of a hotel) but I will look around for the name and get back to you on that one.....

I have found out the name of the hostel I stayed in!! It is called Hosteria Grau. They offer an apartment also, which is a very cheap way to stay in Barcelona
The hostel is clean, offers breakfast and is no-smoking. It is a 2 minute walk from La Ramblas, which is very close to all the nightlife. They have their own website...please take a look it is such a nice, beautifully decorated place, even though it's only 2 star...

Have a fab time in Barcelona!!

For hotels, check with Trip Advisor.com

Also Time Out do the best city guide book. Buy it.

It is a great place but it is a modern city albeit with lots of history and more medieval buildings than most cities.

Depends on your budget but there are lots of reasonably priced places to be found on the net.
Las Ramblas
La Sagrada Familia
Camp Nou.....are all great places to see...Take one of the organised bus tours they pass all the tourist places and you can get on and off at your pleasure.

A word of warning - Barcelona is much uglier than you think it's going to be. I mean, you se all those postcard images of amazing buildings, so you sort of start to picture the whole place being like that, and it isn't - it's a lot of concretey blocks of flats, with the occasional amazing building thrown in. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my visit and liked the place, but I sort of wish someone had told me that before I went!
