They are going about it backwards.
It would be great to have a fast inter-city train. However before you have that, your regular public transport must be of a high standard. That means your bus service, taxi service and regular trains must be running smoothly and without delay. Unfortunately this is not the case since public transport is almost falling apart.

There is no point having a Gautrain go from Pretoria to Sandton when a person would struggle to get to and from a Gautrain station due to a lack of adequate public transport.

Additionally, the whole Gautrain is not even going to be ready for the 2010 World Cup. The Pretoria leg is not going to be finished on time. If there are already such large delays in construction this early, imagine what it will be like when 2010 is closer.

Ultimately, one wonders about the ability of the government to maintain a project like the Gautrain when they cannot even prevent idiot commuters from burning Metrorail trains.

I dont think it will work. It may be build, in time well that will be a different story.
It would be just as dangerous to get on it as it is to use any other public transport in south africa, people will get robbed and murdered. And it is all good and well if you catch the train in Hatfield and come all the way to sandton and then what how the hell are u gona get to work if your work is in Woodmead or somewhere.
And after the 2010 sum stupid guy will put it on fire just to make a point to the government or something else
I think that it will only be money wasted

He he he he, this topic doesn't sound good to the 2 biggest morons (BM7 & AG IV).
Anyway, a lot of money will be spent on this project for one good reason, Investment. Having said so, security, comfort and efficiency should be the Gautrain's first priority for investment to be successfull. It has already been mentioned that the Gautrain stations and the train itself will be fitted with many security cameras. Already it has created more than 500 jobs including temporal ones. That alone has a positive effect on crime rate. We are the second country in Africa to have underground train. If it works for Egypt, I don't see a reason why it shouldn't work for South Africa. I wish the same project could come to Cape Town and maybe Durban.

In principle a great idea and in keeping with big modern cities worldwide. Just hope it's vandal-proof and doesn't become another locus where criminals victimise people.
I know what enormous difference the Taipei subway train here in Taiwan makes to the efficiency of city transport as compared to other Taiwanese cities.
It's the first project of this magnitude that offers visible high technology and progress to the public in many years in SA. Let's hope it keeps serving the general public as an effective and safe mode of transport long after 2010.
And good luck to foreigners pronouncing the "G"...

The planning preceded the 2010 bid. The need was identified a LONG time ago for fast, efficient public transport between the airport, Jhb and Tshwane.

We need it, it is essential for the smooth running of 2010; and we will do it WELL !!!! I will buy Brad and AG a ticket to come experience our train. (Enven though I am from Kzn).

woa! i'm not really sure... i hope (actually i'll have a car by then).
i have my fears about it, what it will turn out like, if the people who'll use it will care enough to not mess it up...i've seen them working through sandton and i truly hope this turns out well and it doesnt become a dangerouse mode of transport...due to train robbers.lol
brad again, "they" meaning black people right... will your charcoal heart ever pump blood intstead of break fluid? i'm starting to feel sorry for you...

Ah Diezel...such a fountain of intellect (i think i'm in love with your brain...lol)

A total waste of money to satisy the ego of one man. It is completely unaffordable for the majority and is likely to become a crime hotspot for those who can afford it. And by the way it is the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Soccer is a term used by those out of touch with modern society and the correct name for the game - football.
