Refused? We still do so, and hopefully for many years.

Switzerland has been a neutral state for about 300 years, not having any external war for 200 years. The Swiss are very critical againt state authorities, and nowhere in the world the so-called "direct democracy" is so strong like here.

Every few months there is a public poll on several important political questions, and that on all political levels i.e. the nation (Switzerland), the cantons (i.e. the provinces/states) and the communities.

Every question and subject is settled on the political level as near to the citizen as possible - so the communities have a high grade of autonomy.

In fact, the differences between the Swiss cantons in some subjects are bigger than they will be one day between the single members of the European union.

Being a member of the EU, Switzerland would have to give up the direct democracy on many subjects as there are central EU regulations. And, besides, Switzerland has an own strong currency, a very powerful economy and some special tax regulations. All this would be in danger (or forbidden) in the EU.

Greetings from Switzerland

Switzerland has long maintained a reputation as a safe country for depositry of funds because they maintain a neutral status in worldly conflicts. Taking up a place in the European union would destroy that reputation because they would then be associated with any and all view points of the union on world events. Therefore they choose to remain unconnected in this way.

Switzerland likes its tradition of non-war--you remember, they weren't in WWII--and non-alignment--like they are always having peace meetings in Geneva. They can do it because, with all those Alps, they have been historically difficult to invade, more trouble than it's worth, so to speak. So, they don't want to break their traditions. Also, they're an independent lot.

Because Switzerland does not want the end of the world to come so soon. You know, with the one world government, one world religion, one world currency, etc.

Because they are smart. The EU wants to impose their stupid idiotic laws on all the member nations. Swiss people say "Heck NO" to the EU and I don't blame them.
