It looks fairly simple at first then you look twice and it is a bit more difficult....any ideas would be very helpful! Which bodypaints are best to use etc

as was stated above - the comic book would be easier to do. the movie outfit is a lot of fun though - although im sure you will realise that it is a LOT of effort. I have been mystique twice now and enjoyed both times.

try snazaroo body paint - match it to whatever clothing you are wearing and get a darker coloured liquid latex to do patterns. i just used a tear drop pattern for it. i got red FX hair gel from boots used a full tube of it and slicked my hair back. blue pumps and blue bag with decorations to match her scales too. also id advise getting a poncho to protect your coat.

Body paint would be the better option.
There's also.... cement but doub you'd like that.
Resin (model small spikes and glue onto your body with special body glue)
The first X-men took Rebecca Romijn 8-9 hours to get looking like Mystique for the films and the ordeal involved nearly 100 individual prosthetics which probably set some sort of record.

I'd suggest a blue tight bodysuit or something then apply body paint (or airbrush)
May give you some ideas on how to go about your fancy dress.

Excellent ideas so far from everyone. I konw you prob want the movie version of Mystique but the comic version would be somewhat easier. She is still all blue w/ yellow eyes and red hair but her dress is just a white flowing gown cut up the legs and she wears a belt w/ a skull on it. I'll try to find a good picture and send you the link

dye your hair get some yellow contacts and apply the paint!!!!! hope you pull it off
