I cannot remember exactly how many they were in number, but they were aprox. 9 or 12and it was sometime in sept. and they were very visible, they seemed to be entering some sort of a haze somewhere near Orion and fade completely one by one until the last one. I live in southern africa to be particular Zambia.

It could also have been a bolide which is a meteor that is large enough to leave bits of burning debris in a trail in back of the main meteor. They would seem to be moving against the stars and would slowly fade as they burned up.

Hi. It was almost certainly a series of satellites disappearing into the Earth's shadow. Many move in a polar orbit.

Well I'm not sure of the date 1997 but if it was 1996, it was Shoemaker-Levy 9, the line of comets that struck Jupiter.
