Is the theory of the structure of spacetime. Is based on two postulates which are contradictory in classical mechanics:

1.- That observers, when in uniform motion relative to one another, have no way of determining whether one of them is "stationary"
2.- Tthat the speed of light in a vacuum is the same for all observers, regardless of their motion or of the motion of the source of the light.
The resultant theory has many surprising consequences. Some of these are:

Time dilation: Moving clocks tick slower than an observer's "stationary" clock.
Length contraction: Objects are shorter along the direction in which they're moving.
Relativity of simultaneity: two events that are simultaneous to one observer will not be simultaneous to another observer moving with respect to the first one.
E=mc²: energy and mass are equivalent and interchangeable.
The defining feature of special relativity is the replacement of the Galilean transformations of classical mechanics by the Lorentz transformations.

There are two Theories:

1.) Special Relativity - this deals with the speed of light always appearing to be constant for all observers. The mass, length and passage of time all change in relation to the apparent speeds of the observers.

Basically - there is no absolute reference for mass, length or time. Speed of light is a constant but always appears the same.

Special Relativity was where the most famous of all equations came from E=mc^2 - relating rest mass (again a relative term) to energy.

2.) General Relativity - this is an explanation of gravity where gravity is not a force like electromagnetism, strong and weak nuclear forces. Rather, we 'feel' gravity when we are actually responding to warps in space-time produced by mass. Space is not uniform and is not euclidean in nature.

What appears to be the straightest line isn't necessarily the straightest line - not when mass has warped space itself.

The special relativity of Einestine:

- It was published in 1905 by him, it treats the problems involving inertial frames of reference (Non accelerated frames)

- Intertial frame of reference: in which an object at rest remains at rest & an object moving with velocity continious moving with the same velocity (Non accerelating), IF NO force acting on it

- Postulates:
----------------
1) Laws of physiscs are the same for all observers (Non accelerating observers)
2) The speed of light in free space has the same calue for all observers (2.998 * 10^8 m/s)

Note: Postulate number (2) is based on many expriments, one of them was (Michelson-Morloy expriment)

It says basically that if Object A is moving, it anything on, someone on object A could claim to be standing still and that the whole universe is travelling around them. It also says that time is relative. Travelling at very great speeds (close to the speed of light) time would move the same for the person travelling that speed, but for someone looking on, they would appear to move slowly.

This only applies to two events that are separated by space and.or time. Two observers will not always agree on how much space, and how much time separates the events. But they will agree on the quantity (space/c)^2 + time^2.

For two events that occur at the same time and place, the observers will agree that the space and time separation are both zero.

(Assuming the observers are competent and honest.)
