Life is so precious that it can be sustained only by sacrificing another life and yet it can not be sustained for too long.

Pragmatically, it represents the food chain. Herbivores eat from an enterly different kingdom of organisms ( plants ) and carnivores, from thier own kingdom, yet seldom from thier own species,or family, though cannibalism exists in nature. Eventually, microorganisms claim the remains of all creatures.
In biology, zoololgy and evolutionary therory it represents a great deal; herbivores represent concentrations of energy that have been exploited by the emergence of predatory organisms. Meat eating gives more energy with less gathering. Eating plants requires much time spent gathering. Carnivores are better manipulators of space and time because the faculty of cunning is important in catching prey, essentially they are "smarter" and have higher metabolisms. I think of a cheeta to be like a formula 1 car, and a cow to be a walking fermetation vat.
I belive that any contention that this is a theological question is due to the fact that you brought a major diety into the mix. :)

Viruses and bacteria kill living things, what is that showing us? Nothing other than the fact that viruses and bacteria can kill living things. Animals eat each other, biological microbes infect living things and kill them, they do this because that is what they do. They do not reason. You and I on the other hand have reason. We do not have an excuse to be animalistic as much as people try to say we do.

It doesn't symbolize anything. There is no god. Life needs to eat to continue. If it doesn't eat, it dies. That's it.
