I think it has to do with the whole process. You get the tea leaves, you boil the water, you pour the boiling water over the leaves, the steam rises, as you patiently await the leaves release of flavor into the water. The scent is peasing to your senses, as the tea cools enough to drink, you have performed a ritual that requires focused thought, patience and that forces you to slow down plus is pleasing to the senses. Also many teas are herbal with actual chemically calming components. Coffee is a stimulant, whereas most teas traditionally were not.

For me it goes back to conditioning. I grew up in a house where whenever something went wrong a cup of tea was made for comfort! I have transferred this, subconsciously into my adult life and now I find even when I don't want tea, but I feel a bit down I will make myself a cup of tea to 'feel better'. I know it's dumb, but it works becuase of the associations...

because it is much simpler to provide someone with a cup of tea (or coffee), than with real answers.... and because sometimes taking a breather really helps.
SO all in all, have yourself a nice cup of tea!!!!

because when some one is confused and wants an answer quick the immediate reaction from the other person is to relax them there for offering a cupper.
