The book is telling me 3ab^2 - 3

ab^2 - 2 - ( 1 - 2ab^2 ) = 3ab^2 - 3

The book is right. You should have:

(ab^2 - 2) - (1 - 2ab^2)

Then simplify that down to

3ab^2 - 3

Book is right...

You probably forgot or made a mistake in the second part of expression: you have article 3a^2b^2 divided by 3a^2b^2, which equals 1, and it is difference between your and the answer from the book.
