I am looking for something that will hold (lengthwise) two pieces of long fabric together like velcro or a zipper would, but I want the fabric to separate easily if pulled apart. Velcro holds too strong as it would require two hands to pull apart at a certain angle rather than opposite forces. It is also too bulky and I really don't want the lengthwise fastener to be noticeable. It would be best if it blended well and didn't cause much of a bump. Is there material out there that interlocks, or another type of fastener that might work? I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks!!

You can buy strip magnets in craft stores. Perhaps you could sew one strip into each side, hidden in the seams. Is it for curtains or clothing, or what?

If you don't mind having the edge of your fabric hemmed, go to your building store or department store's hardware section and pick up two rolls of magnetic strips. They are thin, bendable and somewhat strong. They are used to seal refrigerator doors. Sew them into the material and they will stick together holding them well until lifted. pulled or tugged apart. Make sure the opposing poles ( north, south) are facing each other.

theres a product called wonder web (wundaweb?) i think thats available in haberdashers and in supermarkets - might be too strong for what you're after - i've used it to hem up my curtains and trouser legs. u iron it on - perhaps if u applied less pressure with the iron then it wouldnt adhere so much? oh... but then wouldnt re-fasten... mm how about poppet buttons (the little silver circular ones? easier to pull apart but a bit more fiddly to do up ie not instant.
sorry not been much help have i...! good luck in yor quest!

Spray bond 3M77 or warm glue would artwork. in case you opt for it to be more beneficial versatile, use sobo glue ( permitting to completely dry ) the variety of Velcro that self sticks, will in all likelihood come unattached.

Did you try snaps? They are easy to put in.
