The picture shows a:
Common Moorhen
Gallinula chloropus

Nathan D. you may want to get a closer look at some of the details of your bird ... could be a Purple Gallunule and you provided the wrong picture.
Sorry, Drocks27, using the picture provided, compare the red forehead and the white streaking on the flanks, both of which the Purple G. lack.

Good question. I lived in Florida for a long time and I have seen those birds all the time. I don't think I ever asked or looked into it. Which is unusual because I am pretty inquisitive. I'll keep looking back to see if someone answered it. Check audobon.com. they may have it.

Drock was pretty close. It is in fact a Common moorhen a close relative of the gallinule. Black head, back blackish with some brownish olive, white streaking on the side. But what really gives it away is the red forehead shield which isn't present in the gallinule.

I believe it is a Purple Gallinule.

Purple Gallinule
(Porphyrula martinica)

* Family - Rallidae
* Identification - Breast and head purple in color. Beak is red with yellow on tip. Legs are long and yellow, often found walking across lily pads.
* Food - Plants, snails, insects, mollusks
* Nest - Nest is often made on floating water plants. The Purple Gallinule can be found in fresh marshes, swamps and ponds.

I say it is a moorhen and not the other bird mentioned because it has stripes white on its side in the pic you gave but the other bird doesn't.
