There are no hard and fast rules in the stock market. However, the saying, "buy on the rumor, sell on the news" may apply here, and often holds true.

My experience wit US market when I was there was when at the announcement of an Acquisition the price of the acquiree goes up. Then there is revision and re-revision of offer price by the Acquirer that is who is going to buy and ultimately they settle for a price much higher than what used to be the price of the acquiree before the acquisition annoncement. This is the market incorporating the synergy possiblilities after acquistion which probably even goes to 25% of the normal price before announcement.
