my friends ask a question about the movie but we don't know anything about the game.

Basically the alternate "nightmare" worlds represent the dark conflicting emotions in the person's mind/heart. So the protagonist in each of the game is usually drawn to the town because they're dealing with some unresolved issues/angst (lost loved one, dark past, etc.).

Onheadphones nailed some of it...Just play it. Too darn hard to explain it all in a day, my fingers would burn if i was to type everything about it. There are many themes n stuff going on.
Basically, Silent Hill one and three have connecting stories with Harry Mason and Heather. Then Silent Hill 2 and 4 (the best in my opinion) are connected with background stories involving notorious Walter Sullivan. N yes there is a possibility of Silent Hill being in the protagonists minds.

As a silent hill games fan, the film slightly dissapointed me. It still scared the crap out of me mind you first time i watched it, but the real mystery lies within the games. The games are so much more. There thoughroughly thought through and the structures are neater e.t.c. The movie just sort of seemed thrown together in my opinion and some of the spirit of the games was lost. The movie differs from the game a fair bit in a number of ways, the main reason being that in order for non-gamers to understand it, bits have been changed. Including the question on everybodies lips: are people who end up in silent hill dead/in another dimension/both. The film strongly suggests theyre dead for example Rose and Cybil in the film end up in a crash at the beginning and are led to believe they could have been killed. Also Chris, Roses husband only recieves 'white noise.' (the well known way of ghosts contacting the living) But Cybil ****spoiler**** as we see at the end is burnt by the church and killed e.t.c. so can you really be killed again?
In the game there isn't really that much to suggest there dead just trapped in an other dimension. See my 360 web page for my Silent Hill essays n trivia e.t.c. which will be up shortly in the future. I could type for days otherwise.

A question like this is best left to the professionals. I've played the games and seen the movie and still find it hard to explain it to people. So much back story to understand.

Its a psychological thriller that you have to watch twice to totally understand it.
