As a computer geek, I have access to everal different card readers. If i were to get my hands on your credit (or debit) card, I could run it through a reader, get all the information off it, duplicate it on a couple dozen other cards, mailed them to my firends, and run up millions of dollars of charges on your account. UNLESS the account also required an Identification number - such as a PIN. That number is not stored on the card, so having the card would not give me that number. A PIN keeps people from being able to illegally access your account and steal your money.

It's called two-factor authentication. It means you need more than just one form of proving you are you. In the case of a debit card, the fact you have the card is one piece of evidence that you are you (you wouldn't let anyone steal it right?). The other form of evidence is that you know a PIN number associated with the card (Your PIN number is NOT on the card, not even on the magnetic stripe).

It's an easy way of ensuring that the person entering the pin, is the person who's authorised to use the service that requires the pin.

for security reasons, if we did'nt have them and cards were lost or stolen, the thief or person who finds your card could easily get your cash.
