I think in today's world it is a bit unrealistic. While non-violence can be used as a form of compromise it rarely wins in serious battles.

I think it is, but it depends on who you are fighting against. The British were sensitive enough to start realizing how bad they looked to the rest of the world, and eventually got out of India. Some other governments might just kill everybody who opposed them and not care in the least.
