It was written in black ink that with the time has gone a bit browny...You can go and see it by yourself at tha British Library in London
Four copies of the original Magna Carta survive. Two are held at the British Library while the others can be seen in the cathedral archives at Lincoln and Salisbury.

I saw the copy in Lincoln and the ink is black faded to brownish. It is kept in very low light condtions to stop it fading further, and to stop light degrading the parchment too. Also the case it is kept in has temperature and humidity controls. I think it's amazing that a document can last this long and still be readable. It's also funny to think that bad King John signed something so extraordinary when he didn't agree with it at all but was basically being forced to do so or risk losing all his supporters etc.

It's probably light brown by now. The inks used then weren't all that light fast, and so they faded in time. A solution I once had was dark brown at first, then it began to fade out.
