Mary Washington, not Martha was considered, at one time, the "Mother" as she was his mother.

Martha Washington and Abigail Adams both had profound influence on their husbands. So, since both George Washington and John Adams were key figures in the Revolutionary War and the writing of the Constitution, I would give a vote to either of these women.

Of course, Hillary thinks that she is - and maybe if she was born 250 years earlier - she might have been.

Not necessarily.

The mother of the nation should be the person who while being a female have helped forming the nation as a whole.

In Pakistan we have Mohd. Ali Jinnah as the father of nation. And Fatima Jinah who was his sister as the mother of the nation. Though her being anonymously stated as mother of the nation has little to do with the fact that she was sister of Mohd. Ali Jinah and much more because of her socio-political role in the early years when Pakistan came into existence.

(Do you know that Pakistan had its first female candidate for presidency back in 1960's. Fatima Jinah was the lady and she lost the election. But she still is mother of the nation.)
