The cat's owner was taking him to the vet and when the cat realized this, he ran away from his owner in the parking lot. The story then follows his adventure as he tries to return home, and the various characters he runs into. The story is told third-person but I can't remember if the animals actually 'talked' or not.

It was written sometime in the 90's and was a chaptered story, though written for children who had just graduated to that level of reading.

It was a cute story and one of my favorites as a child and I'd like to find it to pass onto a child in my life. Though I know the details are vague and nobody probably knows the answer, I figure it's worth a shot, haha.

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor has a few books beginning with The Great Escape about two housecat brothers who get out of the house and have a book full of adventures before returning home. They join a group of local outdoor cats and strays, learn to eat from garbage, and harass a mean neighbor dog. I haven't read the other titles.

If you can't find it here, check with your local children's librarian.
