Well, there's obviously a lot of different angles to take.

One angle is it's (mis-)representation of American society. Unfortunately, many people outside the US (and within) base their understanding of America upon the media we export, which typically caters to the lowest denominator. It's no wonder people of strong conviction (like Muslims) despise us for the junk we contaminate their society with.

Another angle is the physiological aspect. Albert Mohler and a few others have noted that there is a direct correlation between the amount of television a child watches and his or her resulting IQ. The more TV a child watches on a daily basis has a tendency to result in a lower intelligence. Additionally, brain scans reveal that a person watching television has decreased synaptic activity in key areas of the brain (this can also apply to people watching the flickering images from video game screens and computer monitors).

And, of course, there's always the discussion on whether TV and other media reflect or influence societal norms. I'd have a tendency to say that it's both. The bottom line is, we as a nation are very irresponsible with what we put on TV, because of money, and our whacky take on "freedom of speech." We've forgotten as a society, that "with great power comes great responsibility."

Is an inanimate object really bad? Isn't how the person chooses to use it? I'm not sure of the context of the essay contest but I'm guessing they will expect a bunch of negative, confirming answers so in order to set your apart, take an innovative approach such as not saying TV is bad but it's how the person uses it. I realize it will be more work for you to think outside of the box but that may be what sets you apart from your competition in this case. Go for it!

Bad in what way?

Just plain bad (and who can disagree) or bad for you?

Find some 'show' you really hate and describe why you think it is bad. You can even add why you think this could be viewed as bad for you.
