St Valentine wasn't just one, but two guys, who were both martyred a very long time ago. It's said that after they were canonized, the Pope made their feast day on February 14th, though later revoked it during the effort to pare down the number of feast days they had. It's believed that the idea of passing notes came from the time that one of the Valentine's was in prison and he passed the jailor's daughter a note saying "from your Valentine." It's also said that St Valentine conducted secret marriages for those not allowed to marry.
Valentine's Day now is an excuse for card and chocolate companies to make some cash (and diamond companies too!), but if you really want to celebrate it for what it's meant to be, it's more of a rememberance day. Hope that answers your question.
