Angel (or Angelus)-when he didn't have his soul was such an utterly evil person. Spike, on the other hand, still seemed to have some conscience, sense of right and wrong, loyalty, love. Was this ever explained? Did it have something to do with the type of people they were before they were turned?

It is all about inhabitions... The 'Id' if you like... We all have this voice inside us that wants to do or say things, wants to eat or drink too much, wants its way all the time. It is the conscience and subconscience parts of our mind that keep that in check. In becoming a vampire, the 'Id' is set free. In Angel, his feelings of anger towards his father was twisted in to a need to hurt others, the way he felt hurt. In Spike, his heart's desire was to be loved, plain and simple...

I think that you and most of the above people must be right. The only clue to that I can offer is this bit a dialogue from the episode Dopplegangland, where of course there is Vampire Willow. This is the exchange that happens after Willow sees "herself".

Willow: (appalled) It's horrible! That's me as a vampire?
I'm so evil and... skanky. (aside to Buffy, worried) And I
think I'm kinda gay.

Buffy: (reassuringly) Willow, just remember, a vampire's personality has nothing to do with the person it was.

Angel: (without thinking) Well, actually... (gets a look from Buffy)
That's a good point.

Now I think Angel was going to say something like - it's exactly the same as before they were turned. OR, they way I always interpreted it was that when they're turned they're less inhibited and can be even more of the person they were deep down inside than they were before. There's no pesky consience/soul holding them back from what they want to do or who they want to be.

Spike was raised in a happy loving home with his mother and was a sensitive poet. Angel was a shiftless drunk who was beaten and constantly run down by his father. You could say that evil Angelus was always getting back at his father. Spike says to Angel in one episode, "Drusilla made me a vampire, but you made me a monster."

They never really got into too much depth in terms of why they were different.
I think you're right about who they were before they were turned, it struck me that Angel was a bit of a louse, while Spike was William the Bloody Awful Poet(I so love that name!!). Spike was sensitive, which may explain why he was different.

Hope this helps.

I think it had something to do with when the Gypsies put that curse on him.
