The Amish leave everyone else the hell alone. They merely ask that we respect their wishes to be left alone. In this, the land of religious freedom, there should be a safe haven for religious groups that lead a simple life. Would I want to live that way? No. But I respect any group of people who decide collectively, we've had enough....we're rejecting the negatives in modern living...and we're just going to do our thing.

They do not believe in vanity. They do not have their pictures taken, and if you try to take their picture, they will become upset. They are very humble people. Some of them are becoming more modernized and do have TV's, radios and phones. There is an Amish family that lives a few miles up the road from me that has a huge big screen TV. Alot of them around here have phones, but it has to be a certain distance from the house. There is one Amish man that lives here that has a killer stereo and ground affect lighting on his horse drawn buggy. It is cool. As for service in the military, they do not believe in anything that involves war or violence. I live in Delaware amongst the Amish. The world could learn alot from these humble people.

The Amish believe in living simply and will not adopt anything modern into their culture unless they are sure it will not interfere with their family life, as they place great importance on family closeness and bonding. For example, televisions, stereos, etc. are out because they recognize the divisiveness these items cause in families. Also, Amish use gas to power things like refrigerators, stoves, etc., and some have windmills.
Their children attend old-fashioned one-room school houses such as your great-grandparents probably attended, where they learn the basics of math, reading, writing, and science. They have no need of further education, as their life is based primarily on farming.

This being because they believe in plain living. They are Puritan Christians so indulging in premarital sex is a mortal sin to them. The whole idea of plain living is keeping things simple so studying science would be contrary in some respects to their way of life. As for their non participation in military service, this may well be because they disagree with war and believe in living in peace and harmony with others around them. The government seeing this has allowed them to remain exempt as they pose no threat to society and see the Amish as peaceful people.
I personally think that the Amish are truly remarkable people and quite frankly are admirable.

Why worry about what the Amish do or don't do? Live your own life and leave them to live theirs. Got to admit though, Amish seem WAY more happier, healthier, etc. more than the rest of the world.

They do study science just not evolution.
The rest are against what they believe the bible is saying. They dont servie in the Army because they are nonresistant. They dont make their house fancy because that could make way for pride. they dont have sex before marriage because the bible says not to. Etc.
