FYI, smoking doesn't mean just using black..you can create a smoky look with any shade you use. I prefer black eyeliner, black tied eyeshadow from MAC (shimmery black), and print eyeshadow from MAC (satin eyeshadow).
But, start with loose powder. Stipple some of it about an inch under each eye, all the way across to catch any shadow that falls. Start by applying a base/neutral color to your eyelids so that the eyeshadow applies evenly. Apply black eyeliner to upper and lower inner eye areas. Lightly smudge it into your lashes to get rid of the "line" look. Use a shadow brush to blend the eyeliner around your eye. User small circular motions. Then use an eyeshadow application/brush to softly retrace the black eyeliner with any black eyeshadow. You're trying to "smoke up" the area. Then use an eyeshadow brush and LIGHTLY apply black eyeshadow by arcing into the crease of your eyelid, very lightly UNDER your eyelid (smoke up bottom lashes) and softly outward from the corner. Use a light/beige eyeshadow to highlight your brow bone (lightly sweep beige across browbone) and under your eye. You can then use a bigger eyshadow brush (contour brush) to blend everything to give it a smoother, smoky look. Remember to use as little as possible as you go, because less is more..and you dont want to look like a raccoon. Finally, evenly rub in the loose powder under your eyes with a sponge applicator or foundation brush.

Hi, I received a Best Answer on this subject maybe it will help you. You can have smoky eyes maybe it's the product or the way your applying it. Look at Tyra Banks or some of your famous Mexican actresses like Penelope Cruz and Selma Hyak they do smoky. You just have to keep finding what works for you, and have fun. Please let me know how it works out for you. Read my info below. Prep your lids, and under your eyes first with a tiny bit of eye cream. Just enough to help your shadows not chalk up. Make sure you use powder shadows and not creams for this. Put a champagne color on top and bottom of lid like near the inner corner of your eyes and up around your brow. You want to define the eye so put a eyeliner along the upper lash line, but not like Amy Winehouse. Don't overkill by putting it on bottom too because the next step will help your eyes pop. Sweep a gray or a slate color along your lid and under the lower eyelashes. Use a darker gray in the crease of your eye for a contour. Remember a lot goes a long way you don't want to look scary dark you want to look smoky and sultry. Sometimes I take a bit of the champagne color and put it on the bottom lid on top of the dark color. It makes the eye color pop more. Don't forget to curl your lashes first before applying any mascara. Here's a trick I use. I always blow dry my hair last so before I apply my mascara after I've already put makeup on I set the blowdryer to high and just for about 10 seconds or so heat my eyecurler using the blowdryer. Make sure you don't make the curler too hot or you will burn your eye lids. I always try it by holding it in my hand first to feel how hot it's become. Then curl your lashes. I have bluegreen eyes and this always looks fantastic afterwards. Remember if you emphasize your eyes the most take it easy on the cheek color and lips you won't need as much, and don't use a heavy dark color on your lips if your going smoky for your eyes. Victoria's Secret has a great lip gloss duo for $14.00 that's fantastic.

Kim's answer is great, but it helps to do it. Go to a makeup counter (MAC is good; I used to work at one) in a dept store and tell the woman what you want. Different liners work differently and will smudge differently. Be prepared to buy and you'll all be happy.

It's hard to explain...just use a dark color right around your eyes and fade it out using lighter colors... Don't use black eyeshadow...use a dark gray or a dark silver with black eyeliner.
