Il Principe Very nice you read it. It is a hard piece of literature to even finish let alone understand.
The theories expressed in The Prince are often venerated as very insightful and shrewd methods an aspiring prince can use to gain the throne, or an existing prince can use to establish and maintain his reign. According to Machiavelli, moral principles must yield to every circumstance, especially in such cases where sordid, inhumane actions may be required.
(personal note: This is how the Mob is run. You would expect some level of deception and murder there and so would people who would have to deal with that prince...so... how can you call it deception if it is expected to happen?)

Machiavelli suggests that the end justifies the means. A prince (or other politician) can and should do anything that is convenient or necessary (lie, cheat, steal, deceive, betray, kill) in order to increase or maintain power.
