I dont think there should be a problem in eating peanuts or peanut butter unless you have a history of food allergies in your family.I ate peanuts during my pregnancy and have it now though i am breastfeeding. My child is perfectly healthy

A contentious issue.

I am a midwife myself with 22 years experience and the peanut issue goes up and down.

There are conflicting test and research results about eating peanuts and peanut butter during pregnancy. Some doctors will swear blind that the chances of a child developing peanut allergies goes up with the amount of peanuts a mother eats during pregnancy. Other doctors will state emphatically there is no absolute link, and that the likelihood of a child developing an allergy is more closely related to whether their family as a whole are prone to allergies.

Personally, I have never encouraged nor discouraged any patient from eating peanuts or peanut butter - in fact, I ate peanut butter every day through my first two pregnancies with my now 20 year old and 17 year old sons and they are fine. In subsequent pregnancies I simply lost my taste for it, I didn't leave it out of my diet for any special reason.

If your family is, in general, not prone to allergies, then reasonable consumption of peanut products will probably not have any impact. However, since your doctor/midwife has access to all of your medical history then I'd listen to them, just to be on the safe side.

I am pregnant with my fifth child and I have eaten peanut butter with every single one of them and have eaten peanuts as well. You need to talk to you midwife and ask why she told you that you couldn't eat peanuts or peanut butter. If she still insists that you cannot w/out a reasonable explanation then you should consider finding another Dr. or midwife. God luck to you and have a wonderful pregnancy.

My doctor gave me a list of foods I can and can't eat while pregnant just yesturday and peanuts were not on the list. I have been eating peanut butter and I don't see anything wrong with it. My mom ate peanut butter when she was pregnant with my sister and she's just fine.

So I do not think there is a problem with it.

Peanuts are perfectly safe to eat during pregnancy. Some doctors tel women who's fmaily have a history of peanut alergies to stay away from peanuts in the 3rd trimester as some studies show in these cases it could help prevent the allergy in the child. But there is no firm evidence and it there is no history of peanut allergies in your family then eat all the peanuts you like. You may want to look into getting a more knowledgeable midwife.

A lot of research has been done on this and other 'food' allergies. It's been found, through real mediacal research that the protiens in peanuts and peanutbutter (that's what people are allergic too) can pass thru to the developing fetus and thru breast milk. A fetus and a baby less than a year old should avoid these as their immune systems can develop the reaction and be fatal. It's not everyone it happens to obviously, many never have the problem..but why chance it?

Strawberries are another one to avoid from birth to 1 year old.

When I was pregnant with my children the doctors had me eat peanuts because they are a great source of protein. They do not hurt anything. I have never heard this before.

some people believe that eating peanut products while pregnant can lead to a higher risk of the child being allergic.

IF there is a family history of peanut allergies you should stay away from it. If there is not there isn't a problem.

Okay, I just read a new article that said you should only refrain from eating peanuts if you and your partner are allergic (obviously you wouldnt eat them if you were allergic :) ) or, if your partner and a child you have already are allergic... Other than that, no research has proven peanuts will cause an allergy to your unborn baby!
