My son is 13 yrs old, a straight A and G&T student attending a Magnet Middle School -one of the best- so I guess that means the problem in getting into a great school would not be a problem of having good grades...but..how about getting into West Point Military Academy??? Any suggestions, ideas, experiences, information we can use starting now??

It's very competitive. He's going to want to have straight A's all through high school and take AP classes. They also look at leadership experience, varsity athletics, and the "whole person".
As the other poster stated, he'll need a written recommedation by your Sate Senator, so don't wait until the last minute to hit your Senator up. He's basically going to have to give 110% through out high school.

I graduated from West Point in 1992. First, be as close to the top academically as you can. Top scores for Act and SAT - take multiple times. Keep improving your PAT scores. Demonstrate leadership in your school and community. Be persistent in your follow up for the academy. Join a local academy society or parent group. Speak with current cadets. Tour the academy. Speak with former grads who will write a letter or recommend on your behalf. If you want it, you can have the opportunity, but you will have to make it happen. That is part of the process. Those who are passive, get passed.

Senators and congressmen generally nominate suitable candidates for attendance at the military academies. Contact your representative or senator to request a nomination. The President can also appoint nominees, children of Medal of Honor recipients are automatically granted enrollment, as are children of previous military academy graduates. Your son sounds like an ideal candidate. Best of luck.

Good grades and a Sponsor (usually a Congressman or Senator)
Sometimes higher ranking Military officials can help as well. He'll prolly want to do community service and ROTC if it's available in you're area

they look at things beyond grades...eagle scout, community service, charitable organizations, sports...you must be nominated by a senator or congressman from your state, it is not an open appplication process...visit the schoool as soon as you can and speak to a counselor about applying in high school....they have summer programs that he can attend to see if he really likes the lifestyle...my best friend from hs went to annapolis (the naval academy) so i am familiar with the application process...it is a big commitment to make...
