Because obviously the newspaper is free and they need money to print the papers and pay their staff, so where does their income come from?

Companies pay them for advertising. As you can imagine because they have such a wide circulation, companies are prepared to pay a premium to advertise by these means

Advertising.

If you look on the front page you will see a distribution figure next to the letters "VFD"

This is "verified free distribution" and it a measure of how many papers are distributed for free so it gives advertises an idea of how many people they will reach and allows the paper producer to set thier advertising rates.

The cover price of a newspaper barely covers the distribution costs, let alone the manufacturing or publishers.

I can confirm that you can actually earn and extra income by taking surveys online or by reviewing new products. Many big companies need to know consumer's opinions about a product before big launches or big marketing campaigns. That's why they are willing to pay you either directly or via intermediates. I work for London Lite and how we pay for it is with Advertising. It works acording to page/half page/ quarter pages and sponsorships. There is alot of money in it.

They know there are some Sap's out there who will buy the Papers...because they think what the Papers say is Gospel......Even if its a bunch of Hogwash
