Ok, EVERYONE is entitled to thier own opinion.....I agree, However, just because a celebrity has the right to free speech, it does not mean I have to agree with them and run out and buy their albums. So why were people so upset about the consequences the Dixie Chicks faced when they made their statement about the president.

No I do NOT agree with the death threats, that is wrong, but declining albums sales, boycott of radio stations, cancelled concert dates, are all consequences that they had to deal with.

We all have possible consequences when we open our mouths to speak, why should they be different?

Yeah. The Dixie Chicks laughed all the way to the bank with those consequences. How long did it take for their album to go platinum? Some promoters didn't promote their concerts, so they got to do Switzerland, France, and other European countries rather than Mississippi and Oklahoma. They still sell in Austin, Texas and most mainstream American cities.
For the record, they made a rather harmless remark about the President not during a war but while the president was trying to sell the world on a war. A war that most of the world and many in America wasn't buying into. Since most of what the President was selling was pure bunk, anyway, the Chicks were pretty prescient by not buying into those lies. After, the Downing Street Papers came out, I bet most of Great Britain would rather Blair had listened to the Dixie Chicks rather than Bush and his phony intelligence.

Isn't it interesting that time and circumstances have changed the Dixie Chix status? They were ahead of thier time, weren't they.

As time has passed, many Americans have had their eyes open to the corrupt and criminal White House and the ineptness of Mr. Bush. The Dixie Chix just said it first, in public.

They handled the consequences of their actions very well and in a mature way. I say "good for them" for the comeback and the Emmys.

If the neocons who attacked the Dixie Chicks had your attitude--that would have been fine. But what people go t upset about was not the criticism of what they said--but of their right to say it.

And even if that had been acceptable--which it is not-it is completely hypocritical on the part of the right-wing--because they are the first to whine whenever anyone criticizes them.

But here's a lesson for you--when you try to suppress freedom of speech--including by boycotts, etc--it backfires in the long run--always. Far from "destroying" the Dixie Chicks, the unwarrented attacks on their right to speak (again, not on what they said) these would-be thught police have made them more popular than ever.

They are still being boycotted, people still do not buy their albums etc... Why should we when you open your mouth the way they did we also have our rights to not listen to them!!! You notice the awards where the fans vote for the awards they have not won so go figure which awards mean the most. One that is just given to them or the one you earned that was voted on by the fans????? People in Hollywood might like them but that is not saying a whole lot!!!!!!! The real people that really count do not like them!!!!

People are entitled to making their own opinions and statements, true. And those statements could endear them to their fans or separate them. You think the Dixie Chicks got it bad, look at Michael Jackson.. ;)

Its always dangerous to have the courage to speak the truth.
I don't think its wrong to take stands, even if it carries consequences. The fans they lost are not consequential in the long run. We are so divided regarding Mr Bush and his war as it is.

I think all these awards shows are run by liberals, how else could a group like the Dixie Chicks, who have destroyed their original fan base, win awards? How does a movie like Farenheit 9/11 win best movie at Sundance but yet be so filled with lies? How can Brokeback Mnt win all this stuff when it was just a mediocre movie? Or Syriana? Movies and artists with social and politcal slants usually win.

you are 100% right. Death threats are stupid, but if you are gonna take a political stand against what 95% of the people you are trying to sell your albums to are for then you get what is comming to you. It should be no suprise to anyone. Liberals just want you think of them as martyrs for their right to free speech when really they were just stupid.

I like their music, and feel they have a right to free speech and wonder why all the fuss?

sway, you are so right, but not everyone feels sorry for
them thats way the lefty's are so angry!!! Their fangs
are showing,& they don't understand why we don't trust
them, can you believe that? We don't trust people who
make money off of songs that make murder seem cool
and right, especially to little teeny boppers or small kids,
and they advertise it's alright to do just about anything?
It's total lack of manners on their part,& the abuse of the
freedoms they had. How tacky is it for a group of women
to bash their own President to another country?
Thats so low class,& it's so degrading to America!!!
I believe Madonna has better class than those rats!
