Most coins have the head of a famous person on it, whether it be a president, dictator, king, or queen. This side is referred to as heads, the other side is called tails.

If a coin is flipped that has no 'heads' it is customary to specify which side is which before flipping.

When it comes to U.S. coins the heads side (obverse) usually has a head or at least liberty there. The eagle or a wreath is on the other side (reverse). A lot of numismatic scholars disagree on some of the older commemorative coins, as well as some of the world coins. These days usually the mint which struck the coin, has the say which is which, on world coins. There are laws here in the U.S. that give the reverse away, for it usually has, as I said an eagle or wreath. Other countries have their laws as well. Kings and Queens are usually on the obverse (heads) side.
