a social problem is defined as any behavior(s) that exist and cause an impact on society. animal cruelty is a social problem since it does impact society. the rise in animal protection laws gives evidence that the people are petitioning their local, state, and federal leaders to mandate stricter and more severe sanctions against any person found guilty of animal cruelty.

Yes, it should... the problem is that we live in capitalism. The "animal cruelty" industry is way too powerful for any governing bodies to recognize animals as sentient beings because there is too much money at stake. Similar to why government does not do more about violence against women, child abuse, human trafficking, and SO many other social problems..... the people in power do not tend to experience oppression. It comes down to money and lack of empathy. That whole "teeth" crap does not wash with me. If humans are so "smart", they would realize that there is always a choice; eat it, don't eat it... promote animal cruelty, don't promote animal cruelty. We have free will but many do what everyone else does and follows the mob mentality of relieving them self from any responsibility for their actions. Oh, don't get me started LOL. Thank you for standing up for animals, Mermaid.

No, because we have a different relationship with dogs & cats than we do with sheep, pigs etc. A dog or a cat is a part of the family. They are on this earth because we form emotional connections with them. They were bred specifically to be our companions, or to work alongside us. That can't be reconciled with their slaughter. Pigs, sheep, chickens (etc) on the other hand are on this earth because there is a market for their flesh. If we didn't eat meat - those animals would not have been born in the first place. Going vegetarian will not save the life of one single broiler chicken, sheep, pig or cow. It'll stop them being born in the first place. Not saving a life - it's denying a life. That said - I do think that animal welfare laws for farm animals need to be tightened up drastically. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that most animals reared for meat would be better off if they hadn't been born in the first place. For a factory farmed animal, I don't think that torture is too strong a word to describe their treatment, all in the name of some cheap protein. Animals reared for meat do have SOME protection against abuse & mistreatment, but what protection they get is wholly inadequate & can be sidestepped anyway if enough money is involved.

No...animal cruelty should be considered a psychiatric problem, and you are dealing with people with people who have mental illness or personality disorders that cause them to not care about the pain they inflict on people or animals. They probably aren't classified as merely a disorder, but rather a form of psychosis!

No,nothing is considered a social problem except when it concerns an human being.

Even if the loss of an animal caused by a neighbour is painful to a family, there's nothing "social" in it.

I think it is a problem with the person that commits such cruelty. Most people have consideration for animals but those that don't need help.

yes it is. If people can harm a helpless animal who cannot fend for itself then it is a telling tale about society putting up with that behavior. Next that person will move up to humans. How can we stand by and let this happen as a society? we turn our heads and don't get involved.

Well yeah, because we as human have evolved to care about animals more and study them to understand how they are alike and different than us.
