Solve: 2(25/4)

First: make the outer term a fraction because its being multiplied by a fraction - place the whole number over 1....

(2/1)(25/4)

Sec: multiply the numerators & denominators, separately....

(2*25/1*4)

50/4

Third: simplify the fraction into lowest terms --- find a number that is divisible by the numerator & denominator > the number is "2" then, you divide the numerator & denominator by "2"....

(50/2) / (4/2)

25/2

When you multiply, you DO NOT need to get a common denominator. When multiplying fractions, you just multiply across the top and bottom:

(2)(25/4)
= (2/1)(25/4)
= (2*25)/(1*4)
= 50/4
= 25/2

You can get a common denominator if you want, but that's more work. The problem with your process above is that 4/4 is not equal to 2. It should be:

(8/4)(25/4) = 200/16 = 25/2

2(25/4) = 2/1 (25/4) = 50/4 = 25/2

This is the same as 2 *25/4, which is the same as (2*25)/4 = 50/4,= (25*2)/(2*2). Two's will cancel out from the top and bottom of the fraction leaving =25/2

If you want to get everything with a common denominator, that's ok... You'll just have more simplification to do later. The problem with what you have done is:

4/4 is 1, not 2. 2 written with a denominator 4 is 8/4. Try this and you'll see it works out, with a little simplification at the end.

think of 2(25/4) as (2/1)(25/4)

simplify the fraction (50/4) which equals (25/2)

2 x 25/4 = 50/4

Think of it as 2/1 x 25/4
Top is 2 x 25
Bottom is 1 x 4

Hence 50 / 4 or 12.5
