Do you want to direct your own research, or do you want to do bench work for someone else? If the degree you are talking about is a bachelor's or master's degree, you are qualified to perform bench work under a principle investigator. Many cancer labs and other health labs are searching for such researchers. You can go to Sciencecareers.com and search for positions, monster works as well.

If you want to direct your own research and have input, I think you should go to graduate school and develop your research abilities there.

Also, if you really are interested in benefitting humanity, you might check NIH or some other government agency for jobs, go to USAjobs and look for something in your field.
