I have a huge oak tree which I don't want to cut down and so does my neighbor. They are beautiful, but the leaves are everywhere. Raking gets to be so tiresome. Are there any other options?

We bought one of those combination leaf blower/vac units. Best $80 we ever spent!! You can use the blower to "organize" the leaves into piles, then switch to vac and suck 'em up! It has 2 speeds so you can suck the leaves up from plants & groundcovers without damaging them. The vac shreds the leaves 10:1 ratio and then you can either put them in compost or spread them as mulch, or dipose of them. The town we live in has a leaf collection service, you put the leaves at the curb and they come around with a huge vac and remove them. When they are shredded with your leaf vac it is even better because the pile is smaller and they don't blow around as much if it is windy.

Use a mulching mower and cut away. If you don't have one, you can always buy a mulching kit to convert your exsiting mower into a mulcher. I never rake, only mulch. The leaves are excellent fertilizer for your lawn long as it's mulched into a million pieces. I never ever apply fertilizer. Just cut with my mulcher tractor. Lawn is super thick and always very green.

I use the lawn mower to chop them up, then I use a yard sweeper to collect the leaves for the compost pile. My yard sweeper came from sears many years ago and I love it. Lots easier than raking, and quick.

I get tired of raking, too! Here's what I do: use the lawnmower, always going the same direction so the leaves end up in a flower bed. And they are already shredded. Saves space in my compost pile, too!

If you have a lawn mower than has a grass catcher on it....then that is the way to go. The mower will suck up all the leaves into the bag and you just empty them into a trash bag or make a compost.

We live in the middle of the woods and raking would be endless we just cut them with the riding lawn mower.

If you have the luxury of waiting until they have all fallen then check with your fire dept. to get a burn permit, and if the grass is already dormant underneath it will come out very green next spring. This does require a one time application of any of the above mentioned methods and the piles can be long and not very deep just touching. Once you light them they will disappear quickly.

My hubby's theory is that if you leave them there they will turn into fertilizer. I can guarantee you this is not a good idea. Go with the leaf blower.
